Driver docked for causing death of six passengers

A 25 year-old bus driver, Selim Lateef, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly causing the death of six passengers through wreckless driving.

The accused, who resides at 4, Freedom Ave. Makogi area of Ogun State, is facing a 9-count charge of wreckless driving and manslaughter.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Donjor Perezi, told the court that the offences were committed on June 23 on Lagos- Ibadan expressway.

He said that the accused drove wrecklessly and caused the death of six passengers inside his bus.

“The accused stopped at Conoil Petrol Station to drop some passengers and entered the highway without looking.

“An upcoming truck hit his bus; six passengers inside the bus died while the driver came out unhurt,” he said.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 7, 28 and 29 of the Road Traffic Acts of Lagos State, 2012.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.A Layinka granted the accused N500,000 bail with three sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till Aug. 15 for DPPs advice.
