A Wuse Zone 2 Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, on Thursday remanded, Daniel Bassey, in prison custody for allegedly stealing his employer’s jewellery worth N18 million.
Senior Magistrate Teribo Jim remanded the defendant in custody till June 2.
Bassey, 28, a cook, was arraigned on a two-count charge of criminal trespass and theft by servant, which the defendant, pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutor Christopher Johnson, Segun Erawa of Apo Legislative Quarters, Abuja, reported the matter at Apo Police Station on May 19.
Johnson said that the complainant and his wife returned from a trip and found out that the defendant, who is their cook, had tempered with the room of the complainant’s wife.
He said that the defendant took the room key from where it was hidden and trespassed into the room.
The prosecutor said that the defendant stole about 15 different types of jewellery belonging to the complainant’s wife valued N18 million.
He also said that during investigation the defendant confessed that he stole the jewelleries and handed them over to Celestine Chukwuka of Life Camp, Abuja.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 348 and 289 of the Penal Code.
